The premise
Edrane erased the eastern province of Sareth from its maps and called the destruction peace. Three centuries later, Nereth Varess leads the Veyr west with an army, an archive of names and a debt no crown can settle.
Rovan IV rules a kingdom he knows is not innocent. As Edrane falls, he faces an enemy who intends to keep him alive—and make his public surrender the foundation of a new order.

Beyond the throne
The human realm of Edrane and the Veyr state of Sareth Mor were once bound to a single kingdom. Their cities still carry the evidence of what separated them.

A state built from survivors, memory and the Returned. Vharin stands rebuilt above its old ruins, its archives keeping names the west tried to erase.
The opposing crowns

Nereth Varess is patient, strategic and unyielding. Her people are fading; she believes the truth of their suffering grants her the right to conquer. It does not make her merciful.
Rovan Theryn is a pragmatic defender of a compromised dynasty. He can bargain for his people’s survival, but he cannot undo the history that brought an army to his gates.
Orsik Velkar commands the queen’s protection; Tavra Ilyen guards the Red Ledger; Maera Holt fights to hold the human line. Their loyalties are neither simple nor free of consequence.
Blood and remembrance
Returned to their own bodies after death, the Veyr endure without age or ordinary breath. Blood sustains their Echo: memory, identity, sensation and control. Without it, what remains can fade.

A rare rite tied to a true name, blood and three nights beneath the earth.
The continuity of a person is fragile—and hunger can destroy it.
An account of survival, decline and the terrible arithmetic of blood.
The powers behind the war
House Varess turns memory into rule; Velkar organizes force; Ilyen manages blood, medicine and survival; Orvane moves through diplomacy and intelligence. None of them are ornamental. Each one protects a function the Veyr state cannot lose.
Across the border, the Church of the First Dawn still frames ritual, public morality and the human reading of history. That means conquest never settles the question of legitimacy by force alone.
