THE MEMORY BEHIND THE MACHINES

Archives & Lore

Every city in Heart of Steam keeps records differently. Aetherholm trusts instruments and sealed files; Velmira gives memory a public ritual; Lunaris measures what can be held without being owned. This is a reading room for those ideas—not a catalogue of ending revelations.

THREE WAYS TO KEEP A STORY

What an archive means in this world

Archives are never neutral storage. They determine who is remembered, which testimony is admitted and whether a living response may be interpreted by someone else. Across the trilogy, each city puts a different pressure on those questions.

Aetherholm

The recorded mechanism

At the Academy of Aetherium and in the city’s sealed records, knowledge is treated as something that can be classified and authorized. The more perfectly a mechanism can be described, the more tempting it becomes to claim control over it.

Velmira

The named and the silenced

Ceremonial memory-lanterns and places such as the Archive of Quieted Names show how status shapes public recollection. To preserve a name can be an act of power; to erase one can be a political decision.

Lunaris

The testimony of the tide

The maritime city turns archives toward changing water, custodianship and records that cannot be reduced to one stable account. The question becomes not only what is preserved, but who is allowed to speak for it.

THE READING ROOM

Memory is kept in places—and in people

A library is one way to preserve a world; an attentive witness is another. These two original scenes introduce the forms of evidence that recur through the novels.

THE READING ROOM

The work of preservation

The Archive of Quieted Names, the Low Lanterns and Aetherholm’s research records suggest that preservation is an active choice. Catalogue, ritual and silence all affect what a community will later call the truth. Reading an archive therefore means asking what is missing from its shelves, not merely what is present.

THE READING ROOM

When an object becomes evidence

Mechanical devices, inscribed memories and ritual objects can carry more than technical information. They may be interpreted as proof, relic or warning depending on the institution that holds them. In Heart of Steam, a beautiful object is rarely innocent of the social system around it.

SELECTED TERMS

A compact lore glossary

Six introductory entries to connect the trilogy’s vocabulary without replacing the stories or giving away their resolutions.

The Veil

In Velmira, masks and ceremonial appearances are bound to questions of identity, permission and the version of the past admitted in public.

Witness

Not just someone who sees an event: someone whose account must be received, weighed and kept from being quietly overwritten.

Aetherium

A material and living force studied through technology, but never exhausted by a simple explanation of fuel or machinery.

Aurum

Lyra’s brass feline automaton. Its unusual responses make the line between instrument and witness a question worth asking.

The Low Lanterns

An underground space in Velmira associated with memories that official ceremonies have not brought into public light.

Open custody

A way of thinking about care that refuses to confuse keeping something safe with possessing the final right to define it.

THE EXISTING FREE COLLECTION

Continue into the Heart Archive

There is already a separate, free Heart Archive on Wonders Workshop. Rather than duplicate its downloads here, this reading room points you to the collection where the materials live.

These are companion materials; they do not replace the novels. Read the descriptions on the archive page before opening a file if you want to avoid additional lore.
